“Blues, soul and jazz music is filled with pain and longing as well as passion and raw emotion.  For many people this music is as familiar to the heart as the voice of a lover and as soothing to the soul as their gentle embrace”

The Blue Souls are a group of five musicians who love and play blues, soul & jazz music.  Uniquely interpreting some of the classic tunes of the genre and also writing their own original songs, the Blue Souls deliver a performance that  is powerful but also seductively smooth.

Harmonica player Blind Boy Benny Campbell’s sweeping lines, solid phrasing and driving rhythm are reminiscent of harmonica playing from the golden age of amplified blues that was Chicago in the 50’s & 60’s.  Ben formed the band in Melbourne in 2005 by persuading long time friend, vocalist, Hammond & Piano player Kate Wilde to join the existing drum and bass line up.

Kate’s vocal ability is outstanding across the range of styles that the group play.  Whether it be singing a smooth smoky jazz number or belting out a foot stomping Saturday night juke joint tune, Kate’s voice is superb. Not only just a great voice, Kate also brings her jazz inspired piano licks & the unmistakeable sound of the Hammond organ which rounds out the Blue Souls sound perfectly.

Guitarist Jeff Evans joined the group shortly after and in addition to his cutting solo’s and driving rhythm work, he and Ben soon formed a strong songwriting partnership.  With Jeff creating the outstanding rhythms and hooks that feature in many of the group’s songs and Ben writing the thoughtfully crafted lyrics, the band has been able to assemble a great range of original tunes.

In 2013 bass player Rob ‘the chairman’ Ranogajec and Dave ‘Richo’ Richardson on the drums took over business in the engine room providing the solid driving rhythm that is the bedrock of the band.

The band loves the festival atmosphere and can be seen at various festivals over the summer months and also regularly throughout the year at pubs and venues in and around Melbourne.

Whether you see them ripping it up on a Saturday night, kicking back on a lazy Sunday afternoon or electrifying a festival stage, the Blue Souls experience is not to be missed.
